The aim was to translate the normal rotation of the key barrel and latch into one simple squeeze action that threw the bolt and allowed the door to be opened.

This functionality needed to be low cost in manufacturing and simple in assembly and at the same time be compact with minimal setup requirements when fitting to a door.
